The Overnight Bag Essentials by theangelera featuring neutrogena skincare I personally, have the tendency to overpack. Even if I know I’m only going somewhere overnight, you will find me mulling over outfits, shoes, accessories and various and sundries for hours. This, is a problem, and since I’m only going somewhere literally for a day, a night, and some portion of the following day, I’ve decided to have it down to a science. Packing shouldn’t take that long. I though maybe you ladies might encounter the same dilemma. So in the spirit of womanly-time-saving, I’ve decided to help a sister out.…
Any place where you have to take a 3 hour plane ride, and then a drive, and then a 30 minute boat ride, and then a mule, yes mule ride up to location? You know it must be exotic. Enter the beautiful, bucolic Verana Hotel in the fishing village of Yelapa, Mexico. With a rustic yet modern aesthetic the 8 individual guest rooms known as “V-houses” were designed by Heinz Legler. Each room at the Verana features plush bedding, and stunning views of the Caribbean sea from their high perch atop the Yelapa hillside. Though secluded, this luxurious hotel features…
We interviewed the iconic, amazing Angela Davis for the Malcolm X Doc. I was stan-ing (inside) I can’t lie. Watch! – Angel
Let’s face it. At some point, we all bull sh*t about our gym routine unless hittin’ the treadmill has already been apart of our everyday life – or we went through some type of fitness epiphany. Well this is mine. In my life personally, I’ve been able to pretty much skate by being a fitness fanatic, or not going to the gym at all because of genetics. Exhibit A, my mom: My mom was the undisputed curve queen when she was my age (27). She was a curvy, thick-thighed, small waisted juggernaut. I inherited my mom’s body type, and hence,…
“When I loved myself enough, I began leaving whatever wasn’t healthy. This meant people, jobs, my own beliefs and habits – anything that kept me small. My judgement called it disloyal. Now I see it as self-loving.” — K. McMillen
Day one is a wrap! Check out my vlog. No makeup, super raw, super tired, but feeling ambitious and energized. – Angel
Soooo I’m producing a documentary on Malcolm X, specifically the last years of his life, his transformation and break from the Nation of Islam, and what his legacy means for the civil rights fight of today. Longest sentence ever, I know. Through TheAngelEra.com, I’ll be taking you through my shooting process, as I work with the dopest director ever, Lamar McPherson. Today, we’re interviewing actor and activist Danny Glover for the project. I figured I’d share with you some of Malcolm’s speeches – my research – that have inspired me. He’s one of the dopest, enigmatic, revolutionary civil rights activists…
I’ve become a cryer. A sniveling, sentimental, cryer. As ridiculous as that sounds I’m owning up to it. In my past, in relationships, friendships, nothing could make me cry. But as I delve into older adulthood, comfortably in my late twenties, things that wouldn’t have made a difference to me in the past, losing people, some tense situations, make me cry. At first I wondered if this emotionalism was a sign of weakness. At first I wondered if I lost my muscle, if I’d changed. But then I realized crying is just as human as laughing, as yelling, as moaning.…
I keep my phone on vibrate. I have so many notifications, emails, texts, and calls, that a ubiquitous blinging noise would probably drive me nuts throughout the day if I kept the volume on high; not to mention the meetings that require quiet or, I just leave my phone in my purse. The problem with that? I miss the important notifications and calls from #bae often go unanswered when I’m away from my phone. The New York based tech company Ringly has a dope, fashionable answer to this problem I’m sure many share. Now I may (am) be on the…
Well… Title change, investigative journalist. Delving into the social and systemic reasons why society functions the way it does can take you to the deepest, darkest recesses of humanity that you wouldn’t think, or want to think, exist. Every new job you take opens something new in you than the previous, it challenges you in a different way and makes you look at yourself in a different light. This one has made me understand that my mission is bigger than me – it’s made me reflect on my mission as a journalist and a person. I want to do more…
Two thousand sixteen (2016) will mark my 10th year as a working, professional journalist, not a “cut and paste” journo as my good friend and fellow journo Jawn Murray would call it, haha. I’ve been grinding, busting my a*s, shedding blood, sweat, and tears, and giving a song to those who don’t have a voice to tell their story, or the eyes to see the world’s reality, I’ve shed light, I’ve entertained, I’ve infuriated, and now, I’ve come to a real turning point in my career. A lot of folks get into professions that are in front of the camera…
Happy Cinco de Mayo folks! Unfortunately, this historically drunken holiday falls on a Monday this year, and those of us who have to clock in the next day can’t turn up as much as we’d like. But no fear! A margarita or two, or three, never hurt nobody! I usually don’t do posts that are so hyper-local, but since I live in the lovely DMV and I love it, I decided to help my local folks out with a list of the best Cinco de Mayo spots. Enjoy! Bandolero DC3241 M St NW, Washington, DC 20007(202) 625-4488 As soon as…
It’s festival season folks! Coachella, Broccoli City Fest, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, the list goes on. I love to take any opportunity I can to dress up in what wouldn’t be normally acceptable in everyday life. So you’ll see me decked out for Halloween, Christmas, Easter (yes, Easter) and of course, festivals. The must-have accessory for any dope girl when it comes to festival apparell is a flower crown! I’m crafty, and love anything customized, so I thought this year instead of buying a generic flower crown that I’d see everyone with at the festivals, I’d make one myself. It was simple enough…
So, I’m sure that headline sparked outrage in you, at least I hope it did. Copenhagen Zoo in Denmark is killing healthy animals. They euthanized a family of four African lions (a 16-year-old lion, a 14-year-old lioness and two lions cubs) and four weeks before that, killed Marius the giraffe to make room for a new one. Yes, I’m serious again. Why’d they killed the four lions? Because they’re introducing a new male lion into the pride, and since they figure the new male lion would immediately kill the cubs, the zoo folks did his natural dirty work for him.…
Spring is here! Which means it’s time to get lazy a*sses up and do a deep clean to clear that winter funk out of the house. My usual routine consists of deep cleaning the carpets, sliding the windows off and cleaning the front of them, and just generally getting down and dirty double time with the house. In an effort to go organic in recent years, I’ve tirelessly researched all-natural cleaning products, got recipes passed down from grand-folks, and researched on the net. Now, I bring my curated list of all-natural, DIY home cleaning products to you. Don’t be scurred.…
Happy Spring Equinox folks! As it gets a little warmer (for a second,) we’re all reminded that bikini/trunk season is upon us! Even though abs are made in the winter, who says you can’t ramp up that fitness and beauty routine in the short months before summer? A summer ago, while preparing to host the BET Awards red carpet, my trainer Deanna Jefferson worked me out to death in the morning (smile,) but also recommended that I try paleo, a diet which consists of the raw bones food essentials, unprocessed meats, tons of veggies, some fruit, and absolutely no grains.…
It’s my birthdaaaaay today! And being the nerd I am, I decided to look up all the historical events that occurred on my birthday. From freed slaves returning to Liberia in 1895, to the 1st U.S. National Wildlife Preserve (Lake Merritt in Oakland, CA) being established in 1870, to Barnum & Bailey’s Greatest Show on Earth opening in 1881! It’s interesting how so many events that occurred on the day you came into this earth are so similar to your passions and interests. In celebration, here are some dope images of vintage Barnum & Bailey’s Greatest Show on Earth posters. …
The woods, the wild, women I love, a gorgeous cabin complete with tons of champ & healthy food. A perfect weekend. This year for my birthday I decided to host a girls’ weekend in Elkton, VA instead of having a club party (now I’m having a club party as well) lol. The women I invited aren’t only my friends, but hard working, successful folks who all need a break from the hustle and bustle of urban life. It was amazing to have almost all the elements of my life that I love come together. Brilliance. Thanks to Reebok Classic…
Ah! If you’ve read any of my posts about the music I love, you’ll know that I am small-time obsessed with M83‘s music. Epic, original, yet orchestral in scale, their music transports you from where ever you are, to an amalgamous musical universe of their making. Imagine my excitement when I found out they’d be on the Divergent soundtrack! Yes, I am a sci-fi, nerdy fan girl, and have read every book in Veronica Roth’s Divergent Trilogy. Unless you’ve been living in a cave, or don’t watch TV at all, you wouldn’t know that the books were turned into a major…
See? I told you fashion houses are following the trend of merging their spring campaigns with nature and wildlife. The latest to do so is French fashion house Louis Vuitton. The newly released images of their S/S ’14 resort and ready wear collection were shot by photographer Peter Lindbergh, and star Karen Elson and Edie Campbell. The real star of course was the bucolic landscape of South Africa and the cheetah and giraffe that were used for the shots. I guess they “make” these photographs look Africa-esque. I hope you read my sarcasm in that sentence. The campaign, titled “Spirit of…
